I'm fed up to the ears with old men dreaming up wars for young men to die in.

The News

The News is all about focusing on the trees and not seeing the wood, and usually focusing on the bark and being unaware of the root, stem, shoot, leaf, bud, flower, fruit who all have a different story to tell.

The News supports the line of progress, focuses on a small section of time - the instant now - and places it only in a narrative of continuous progress and growth. It does this because it can only see a linear and small scale context.

The News works to prevent the consumer from seeing that this fragment is a part of a larger narrative arc that is itself merely a segment in an historical cycle.

In 1969 Theodore Roszak, considering the emerging youth counter culture which flared briefly and threatened the status quo, wrote. "If the resistance of the counter culture fails, I think there will be nothing in store for us but what anti-utopians like Huxley and Orwell have forecast - though I have no doubt that these dismal despotisms will be far more stable and effective than their prophets have foreseen. For they will be equipped with techniques of inner manipulation as unobtrusively fine as gossamer. Above all, the capacity of our emerging technocratic paradise to denature the imagination by appropriating to itself the whole meaning of Reason, Reality, Progress and Knowledge will render it impossible for men to give any name to their bothersomely unfulfilled potentialities but that of madness."

In the event of course the counter-culture turned out to be a flash in the pan quickly treated with the tools of disconnection - fragmentation, marketisation, isolation of the core, and assimilation of the mass. You can't rely on the young to stay the hard course of revolutionary change - they are too easily distracted.

Socialism, Liberalism, Conservatism and Nationalism

It seems that very often people on "the Left" like to brand things of which they disapprove as being in some way "Fascist". They are using the word, or the stronger "nazi" label, as nothing more than a snarl word, devoid of content beyond meaning 'I think this is bad nasty stuff'.

It is as well to remember something about history and what fascism and national socialism actually were and why they were so popular.

Filters and Prisms

A filter is designed to block out unwanted or irrelevant stuff so that what you get through the filter is purified. (or alternatively what is trapped in the filter may be the bit you want with the impurities washed away after passing through)

A prism breaks stuff up into its components so that you can analyse it.

This is NOT a "Blog" because I dislike both the word and the usually self serving shite that such things contain. Not that this website isn't full of self serving shite, but it is not intended for you to read and you won't find any RSS or Twatter feeds or FaecesBook links (although if we've actually met in person and have reason to keep in touch you might find me there) and you also won't find it organised like a diary with chronological ordering dominating genuflecting at the altar of the Tyrant Thyme. Instead it is just a random collection of loosely linked and categorised ideas and things I find interesting and thoughts that occurred to me.
