Work is for Losers

So last week the Vice Chancellery was distributing its awards for well done-ness to staff. Last year I was nominated for one much to my embarrassment as it was for something that many other people had contributed to, but fortunately the awards ceremony (a blooming black tie dinner - not my scene) was on my 60th birthday so I had excuse not to go, and fortunately again I didn't win it anyway.

This year seeing it from the other side there is a clear message coming from the VC through all of the posters advertising "Are You a Winner?" - and that is that if you are not a winner then you are a Loser and therefore a burden to the enterprise and you should just feck off.

So who got a pay rise of 11% in 2010-11 while her staff got a 0.4% rise (or a 3% cut in real terms)?

Whose peers doing the same job got a 0.8% increase while she enjoyed her 11% inflation busting top-up to her gross salary?

Who gets paid 32% more than the average salary of her peers?

Answers in today's THES

Who actually does the work which increases our university's efficiency and rankings?

WE ALL DO

Who gets all the pies?

SHE DOES

What is a Complaint?

Category: Rants

If some organisation like a big financial company (Aviva to give a specific for this case) writes to me as a customer with some information about our mutual business and I then write back asking for clarification of a couple of points and also if they could send the leaflet which they had stated was enclosed but which had in fact been left out, then I am probably making an enquiry, not a complaint.

Claim (noun)

  1. a statement that something is true:   "There were claims that he had lied."
  2. an official demand for something you think you have a right to: "a claim for compensation"

So in my simple way I thought that a "no claims bonus" was a bonus that I got for not having made a claim (sense 2)

This is NOT a "Blog" because I dislike both the word and the usually self serving shite that such things contain. Not that this website isn't full of self serving shite, but it is not intended for you to read and you won't find any RSS or Twatter feeds or FaecesBook links (although if we've actually met in person and have reason to keep in touch you might find me there) and you also won't find it organised like a diary with chronological ordering dominating genuflecting at the altar of the Tyrant Thyme. Instead it is just a random collection of loosely linked and categorised ideas and things I find interesting and thoughts that occurred to me.
